In the past year I have lost two of the people I loved most in this world. One was like my little sister, the other a mother, best friend, teacher for 30 years. They are still in my heart, which shall remain there until forever.
But as happens in life, when I moved to Melbourne eight years ago from Sydney,I didn’t get to see them as much as I used to.Something always seemed to get in my way—work,my dogs and so on.While my excuses seemed reasonable, when I heard my friends were fading, there was no time left.
Sadly,on both occasions,I was too late to give my beloveds the last hug,to whisper in their ear what they meant to me or to thank them for the joy they gave me.And this is something I regret. But instead of beating myself up,I’d rather learn from the hardest of lessons.
The reason why I am sharing this story is that I have decided to put those I love before everything from now on—to make keeping in contact a priority(优先)always, not sometimes;and to enjoy them while they are here.
In fact,I have decided I am going to not just enjoy friendship more—but enjoy everything more. And I am going to remind those I love that I love them, not just in writing but face to face and as often as I can.Because leaving anything for later is taking the risk that later may never come around.

Even before a baby is born, the process of learning language has already begun. In the third stage of pregnancy, when the baby’s ears are fully developed, the intonation(语调)patterns of the mother’s speech are sent through the fluids in the body. This is thought to be like listening to someone talking in a swimming pool:It’s difficult to make out the individual sounds, but the rhythm and intonation are clear. This has an important effect on language learning.By the time a baby is born, she already has a preference for her mother’s language. At this stage the baby is able to identify language through the intonation patterns.
For example,French and Russian speakers place emphasis on different parts of a word or sentence,so the rhythm of these two languages sounds different.Even at four days old, babies can use this information to tell their own language from an unfamiliar other language. This means that the newly born infants(婴儿)are ready to start learning the language that surrounds them;they already have an interest in their mothers’ language.
Research has shown that babies prefer to listen to this exaggerated(夸张的)type of speech than typical adult—like speech:They pay more attention when a parent’s speech has a higher pitch(音调)and a wider pitch range compared to adult like speech with less exaggerated pitch features. For example,a mother might say the word “baby’’ in an exaggerated “singsong” voice, which holds a baby’s attention longer than it would in a simple adult—style voice.Words produced in this way also stand out more from the speech stream, making it easier for babies to pick out smaller groups of language.
So,baby talk is not just a way of getting involved with infants on a social level—it has important effects on language learning from the very first moments of a newborn’s life.
28. What does a baby first learn in the process of learning language?
A.Her mother’s language. B.Individual sounds.
C.The rhythm and intonation. D.Speeches around.
29. How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A.By making an instruction. B.By providing an example.
C.By giving a definition. D.By making a comparison.
30. Why does a mother prefer the“singsong”voice when talking to her baby?
A.To amuse herself.
B.To teach a song.
C.To attract her babies’attention.
D.To make her baby familiar with a higher pitch.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A.Baby talk helps infants learn language
B.Babies tend to learn from their mothers
C.Babies are born with unusual learning ability
D.Baby talk helps infants tell one language from another
D
lt’s 10 am on a Saturday. Ricky Picone, 11, and his brother David, 10, are soaked in sweat. Two seconds remain in the game, and David is up by one point. Ricky grabs the ball. He shoots;he scores! “Game over. You lose! ” shouts Ricky.
A morning basketball game? No. Ricky and David are in their basement and still in their sleepcoats. They are playing video basketball. Their parents have been calling them to come up for breakfast for 25 minutes. Morn and Dad are not too happy.
Sound familiar? No wonder. Video games are big in kids’ lives, and in some cases they are most important !
248 million video and computer games costing 7.3 billion dollars were sold in the US. That’s over two games for every family. With all the cool new games, some kids can’t stop playing.
You know the kids. They are the ones who spend more time with video games than eating or sleeping. “They’re only kids. ” says John Szendiuch, 12, of Pelham, NewYork, “ those things are their whole life. ’’
When kids play all the time, parents become upset. Ron Hughes of Missouri found that he couldn’t even talk to his son Russell, 9, when he was playing a video game. “ The phone would ring, ’’says Hughes. “ and Russell wouldn’t hear it. ”
Parents also worry about violence. The blood—gushing in many video games is enough to make some parents ban all video games. Surprisingly, experts who study kids and video games say games are not all bad. Some games build problem-solving skills.
How do kids and parents keep playing games under control? “ It’s important for parents to take an interest in what kids are playing. ” says expert David Walsh. “Then parents can make fair rules and understand why kids love the games.’’
Walsh believes parents should limit kids’playing time. He recommends(建议)no more than 90 minutes a day. But watch out!Kids are going to want to play even more.Video games are becoming bigger, brighter, and even harder for kids to resist.
