You may often hear some myths(传言)about animals. For example, one dog year equals about seven human years, chameleons(变色龙)change color to match their environment… Today, let’s talk about birds. It is said that if you touch a baby bird, the parents will completely abandon(抛弃)it. Do you really believe it?

In fact, most birds have a very poor sense of smell, so in most cases are unable to even notice the smell of humans on baby birds. Not only that, but most types of birds aren’t so quick to abandon their young when they sense danger. Some types will even do their best to protect their young when they are in danger.

Indeed, in very few known cases, parent birds sometimes abandoned their nests from something touching their young, just because they noticed it by sight, not smell. When this happens, the parent birds usually won’t care, other than to be a little more careful than normal. Sometimes, they may temporarily(暂时地)abandon the nest in order to better watch whatever disturbed their nest comes back.

What’s more, in most cases, even if the nest is destroyed by wind or something to that effect, you could create a new one and put all the baby birds back in it, and when the parents came back, they wouldn’t care their baby birds were in a different nest, so long as you put the new nest near where the old one was so they can find it.

1)Which of the following is true?

A . Birds have a very good sense of smell.

B . A baby bird will die soon if it is touched by someone.

C . Whatever disturbed the nest will never come back.

D . Some birds will protect their babies when they are in danger.

2)What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A . Their nest.

B . Their baby.

If you ask soma people, “How did you learn English so well?” You may get a surprising answer, “In my sleep!”

These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test “Learn-While-Sleep” methods, which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one.

Specialists say that this “sleep study” method speeds language learning greatly. They say the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period (时期) during the day, and does not affect his rest in any way, A word of warning, however, that sleep teaching will only strengthen in your mind what you have studied already while you are awake.

In an experiment. lessons were broadcast (广播) over the radio. Each lesson lasted twelve hours from 8: 00 p. m. to 8: 00 a. m. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the students awake. At 11: 00 p. m. a lullaby was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2: 00 a. m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes to review the lesson. The cradlesong (a kind of soft song making you fail asleep easily) sent him back to rest again while the radio went on At 5: 00 a. m. his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast.

1)What’s the result of the experiment “Learn-While-Sleep”?

A . tired and uncomfortable

B . easy and efficient

C . the only way of our study

D . easy and comfortable

15. (8分)阅读理解

Everybody was surprised, and Darcy, after looking at her for a moment, turned silently away. Mrs. Benet, who thought she had a complete victory(胜利) over him, continued her talk.

“I cannot see that London has any great advantages than the countryside, except the shops and public places. The countryside is more comfortable, isn’t it, Mr. Bingley?”

“When I am in the country,” he replied, “I never wish to leave it, and when I am in town it is pretty much the same. They each have their advantages, and I can be equally(同等的) happy in either.”

“Aye-that is because you are easygoing. But that gentleman,” looking at Darcy, “seemed to think the country was nothing at all.” “Indeed, Mama, you are mistaken,” said Elizabeth, stopped her mother. “You quite mistook Mr. Darcy. He only meant that there were not so many different kinds of people to be met with in the country as in town, which you must acknowledge(承认) to be true.” “Certainly, my dear, nobody said there were; but as to not meeting with many people in this neighborhood, I believe there are few neighborhoods larger than ours. I know we had dinner with twenty-four families.” Hearing this, Mr. Bingley’s sister couldn’t help laughing. Elizabeth’s face turned red. She stopped her mother and asked, “Mum, Did Charlotte have dinner with us tonight?” “No, she would go home. I guess she was wanted. She was a little pain. For my part, Mr. Bingley, my daughters are brought up differently and politely.” “She seems to be a very pleasant young woman,” said Bingley.

“Oh! Dear, yes, but you must acknowledge that she is not beautiful. Lady Charlotte herself has often said so, and envied(嫉妒) my eldest daughter, Jane’s beauty. I do not like to boast(吹捧) of my own child, but to be sure, Jane—one does not often see any body better looking. It is what every body says. I do not trust my own partiality. When she was only fifteen, there was a gentleman at my brother, Gardiner’s home in town, falling in love with her when seeing her for the first eye.” —(chosen from an English novel Pride and Prejudice)

四、任务型阅读 (共2题;共29分)

16. (4分)阅读下列短文,在空白处填入与短文内容相符的信息,完成阅读摘记。

English is the first language of several countries. However, it has many differences. British, American, and South African English are all spoken differently. In many English language courses, the British and American differences are taught. One is not more correct than the other, but there are important differences between the two.

Probably the biggest difference between American and British English is the vocabulary. Different words and expressions are used to talk about the same thing. For example, in the United States, people throw their garbage into the trash can. In England, people throw their rubbish into the dustbin. In Britain, people take a lift to the fifth floor. In America, people take an elevator.

American and British grammar can be also different. For example, speakers of British English will ask “What did you do at the weekend?”, but Americans usually say “On the weekend.” In the United States people usually say “I’ve gotten a new car.”, but in the UK they will say “I’ve just got a new car.”

The pronunciation in American and British English is also different, even when the spelling is the same. The word “tomato”—pronounced “to-mah-to” in British English—is a classic example of this.

Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are three ways English is different in different parts of the world. Learning all these is not easy, so English learners should just know that they are always there.
